With hundreds of different dance forms, it’s no surprise there are dance movies that cater to every type of dance. From thriller to romance and hip hop to ballet, here’s a list of the top 5 Dance films:
Step up Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, the now married couple, star as Tyler and Nora in Step Up. This film heats up with a twist of modern hip-hop and romance. Tyler’s punishment for vandalising Maryland School of Art leads him into meeting dancer Nora and together they perform a breathtaking dance. This movie came out in 2006 but has since inspired many remakes and sequels.
Black swan: The only thriller on the list, Black Swan is meant for mature audiences and features star Natalie Portman. Portman plays a ballerina who becomes obsessed with her ballet character and gradually loses her mind. Although the movie has its creepy parts, it portrays beautiful ballet performances.
Center stage: This film came out in 2000 and follows a group of students attending the American Ballet Academy in NY. It shows the realities and drama of being a teenager and competing in the ballet world. Many of the actors and actresses in the film are professional dancers, so expect the best when it comes to ballet.
Dirty Dancing: My personal favorite on this list, Dirty Dancing came out in the 80’s and is a classic romance. Starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, this film is full of romance, comedy, and drama. The final dance made the song “The Time of Your Life” famous across the world and can make anyone want to get up and dance.
Footloose: Both the 1984 Footloose and the recent remake in 2011 belong on this list. In the modern take of the movie, star Kenny Wormald moves to a town where dancing and rock music are outlawed. He takes the town for a ride with his rebellious attitude, dance moves, and romance with the Reverend’s daughter.
