Motivation: How to Start Training

Often times people over think what they need to do. Depending on the training they want to begin, they start by researching different programs and methodologies.

While it is good to do your research, all that information you find through articles, websites, and textbooks can lead to a type of training paralysis.

You start to get overwhelmed and decide to start tomorrow. The only problem is that tomorrow never comes.

The best way to start training is to just do it. Not to sound harsh but stop thinking and start doing. We have all had the same thoughts, concerns or questions when it comes to starting:

  • I don’t know where to start?
  • What should I do? I don’t know anything about periodization?
  • How many reps or what weight should I do?

All of the thoughts, concerns, and questions are valid and depending on your goals you should do your research and find out the best training information, but when starting out stop thinking and start DOING!

When you start training it is important not to overdue it. If you want to begin a running program start with running for a couple minutes or if you want to start a weight lifting program go to a gym and begin with going through the nautilus weight circuit one time. The important thing is to go do it!

Once you start then it will be important to develop a program. Don’t be afraid to seek the help of professionals within your chosen field. Become a student of your training. Know how you learn best, whether that is through reading articles or watching videos. Pursue that venue vigor and heart. Personally when I began throwing I went to youtube.com and began to watch videos of Olympic throwers. I watched hundreds of videos over and over again, analyzing every part of the throw. I became a student of throwing.

The same thing applies to you. Start by doing then become a student. The hardest part of training is getting started, so just DO IT!
