Momentum Among Female Coaches in Professional Sports

Lieberman texted ESPN Radio’s Ian Fitzsimmons last night saying, “I am a King.” One year after Becky Hammon became the first full-time female coach in the NBA, the Sacramento Kings announced Nancy Lieberman will be joining their team. The second female NBA assistant head coach is no stranger to working with the men’s league. The Basketball Hall of Famer worked at high-profile camps last summer instructing NBA players. We had the pleasure of meeting Nancy when we attended the National Basketball Retired Players Association conference in Cancún last year.

Sam Amick of USA Today shares, “The 57-year-old Lieberman has been doing her part to blaze this trail for years. She was the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks’ D-League team, the Texas Legends, from 2009-11 and later served as assistant general manager for a year. That hire marked the first time a woman had coached a men’s team in the NBA.” Becky Hammon being the first female NBA coach to lead the Spurs to a summer league win; the Arizona Cardinals announcing that Jen Welter will join their team as the first female NFL coach; Lieberman’s hire – female coaches in professional sports are creating waves this summer. We’re excited about this momentum and look forward to more great coaches being hired by professional teams in the future. Photo credit: Otto Kitsinger/NBAE/Getty Images
