March Madness Wisdom From John Wooden

March Madness Wisdom From John Wooden

Millions of people will follow the NCAA tournament this month.  Although a few games have already been played this month, today is when March Madness officially starts.  Just about everybody I know will complete a bracket, and watch the games in anticipation of great plays, great games, and memorable moments.  I plan to enjoy it with my family.

All eyes on me
Each player playing in the tournament knows many eyes will be following their every move.  Every coach knows it, and knows they could be judged on the coaching decisions they make.  Both coaches and players  understand their future can be changed for the better or worse during March Madness.

Winning when it counts
One coach who participated in March Madness before it became known by that name, understood the importance of those following you.  Coach John Wooden, of UCLA, is widely known as the greatest coach at any level, any era, and any sport.  His won-loss records in the regular season, and tournament are nothing short of unbelievable.

Having the right perspective
Coach Wooden not only understood the impact on your future, but also the impact it can have on the future of those who are following you.  He reminds us to keep this in perspective as we make choices in sports and in life.  As sports parents and youth mentors we have a huge responsibility and privilege which impacts those we are leading.

This Little Chap Who Follows Me
Check out the video below, and let Coach Wooden encourage and inspire you to be the best coach, role model, and leader you can be.

A careful man I must always be. A little fellow follows me

I know I dare not go astray. For fear he’ll go the self-same way.

I cannot once escape his eyes. Whate’er he sees me do, he tries

Like ME he says he’s going to be-This little chap who follows me.

He thinks that I am good and fine, Believes in every word of mine

The base in me he must not see, This little chap who follows me.

I must be careful as I go, Through summer’s sun and winter’s snow,

Because I am building for the years to be. This little chap who follows me!
