Coach Spotlight Interview: Baseball Coach Randy H.

0994da7eb7d7660d4eff4023c653a17fe5e61a22Meet Coach Randy H.! Randy is an All-Star baseball coach in Lafayette, LA, who has vast knowledge of the sport through both playing and coaching. He believes that what you put into baseball decides what you get out of it. He likes to focus on both the mental and physical aspects of baseball to help his players reach another level.

Tell us about your experience with baseball.

As a high school player, I was an All-District player at Klein High School in Spring, Texas. I played college baseball in Texas, until sustaining a career limiting injury my sophomore year, while pitching. I set a single season record for playing all nine positions during my freshmen year. After recovering from major back surgery in college, I played for 7 years in a Semi-Professional baseball league (sanctioned under the National Baseball Congress) in Houston. I have been an assistant coach at a junior college, where the team has been NJCAA National Champions four times. Additionally, I was an assistant coach at Texas A&M University in Kingsville and the head coach for Athletes in Action. I have over 15 years of coaching experience, primarily at the high school and college levels, and I have instructed many different age groups, from 8-22. In Florida, I coached two High School State Championship teams and have coached many players that moved on to play at the high school, college and professional levels, including Jonathan Papelbon and Darren O’Day.

Why did you decide to become a private coach?

I enjoy teaching and feel like I have a strong balance between having fun, creating a disciplined environment and incorporating how these attributes will carry on in life. Watching kids succeed and being a positive influence in their lives is important to me. Being able to spend one-on-one time with a kid and really build the skills and fundamentals that are necessary to be successful in baseball, and in life, is a lot of fun for me. Watching people have success and knowing that I was a small part of it is very rewarding for me. It is a way of “giving back”. What can a client expect from private lessons with you? I like to take some time to understand what a player is trying to accomplish. Clients should understand that what we accomplish in a one-hour session will not benefit them unless they continue to practice for additional hours every week. I will assist the player in developing a strong positive mindset and belief in themselves. I will ask for constant feedback from the player and will tell him what I expect from him in terms of effort and attitude. Do you have any success stories from coaching an athlete?

Saying this with all humility, there have been many instances where players have come back to me and said that I had a positive impact in their lives, not just as a coach, but as a life teacher. I have always tried to be a very positive role model for my players. The part of my teaching that I hope to have the most impact with is the mental toughness aspect.
